Coming off the busy holiday season is tough. After the last of the pumpkin pie has been eaten and the gifts are all exchanged, the last thing you want to do is spend a day or two taking down the decorations you spent countless hours putting up. But if you don’t do it, no one else will.
Getting organized after the holidays doesn’t have to be stressful, though. Follow these tips for making your post-holiday routine a little more painless (some rum balls won’t hurt, too.)
Un-deck the halls with ease.
Christmas lights are beautiful, but a major pain to put up and take down. Do yourself a favor and prevent string lights from becoming a tangled mess come next year by wrapping them around a plastic hanger. Store your tightly bundled strands in a labeled box or container for easy-access. The same trick can work for garland, too, with a sturdy piece of PVC pipe.
Store ornaments safely.
That glass elf ornament that’s been in your family for decades? Yeah, you don’t want to risk breaking that. Keep delicate ornaments protected by packaging them correctly. Wrap small ornaments in bubble wrap, and place in egg crates. For larger ornaments, fashion larger dividers out of cardboard, wrap, and place in a storage bin.
Clean up after guests.
Hosting is a big endeavor, and between rearranging furniture to make room for some extra sleepers and preparing a big meal, it can take some time to get things back to normal. Start small by making a list of a simple organizing task you can accomplish each day, like decluttering the living room, cleaning the bathroom, or tidying up the pantry. Before you know it, you’ll be able to tackle everything on your list without wearing yourself out.
Fix a busted budget.
By the New Year, most of our wallets have seen better days. Try to get back on track by making a list of expenses from the end of last year, and paying off any incurred credit card debt you may have racked up from gift-giving. Be careful not to pay off too much, too quickly, though. Making small payments a little at a time can help you avoid going even further into debt.
Avoid a post-holiday breakdown by following these tips and making sure you get plenty of rest this month. It’s not uncommon to feel drained, so, remember to take time for yourself!
