Pay tribute to the military this May by taking part in festivities going on across the US! Here are a few places worth visiting during Memorial Day weekend.
Memorial Day Weekend Parade and Concert
This is the largest Memorial Day parade in the US honoring the military. The parade is televised nationally and brings in well over one million viewers, but there is nothing like watching the event take place live and the overwhelming amount of support of those from the American Revolution to present day. The parade is a two-hour long event free of charge. Simply bring a chair and enjoy a day of celebration. As for the concert, the musical guests will wow audience members on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol on Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend. The concert is broadcasted on PBS as one of their highest-rated programs and is a free event to attend live.
Atlanta Memorial Day 5K Classic
This annual 5k takes place in Woodruff park and honors those who have served or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. During the last mile of the 5k, runners will take part in the final mile, where you are asked to pay special attention to those who have served, and honor those still serving.
Fleet Week NYC
Queens, New York
This is a wonderful opportunity to meet those involved as sea service members like sailors, coast guardsmen, and marines. This year will be the 31st annual event honoring those who have served and getting the community to get to know those currently in service. Events will include, the parade of ships, a Navy Band concert in Central Park, and much more.
Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach
The Jones Beach Air Show brings in at least 200,000 people each year, so be sure to arrive early with plenty of food, sunscreen, and water to enjoy the air show ahead. The event is free, but parking is ten dollars unless you use other means of transportation. Performances will include, the United States Army Golden Nights, Air Force Thunderbirds, civilian pilot Sean D. Tucker, and many others.
On Memorial Day, a wreath laying ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. preceding the annual parade that will begin at noon on State Street. You can also spend the afternoon visiting the Pritzker Military Museum &Library to learn about and honor the military. End the weekend celebration by watching Memorial Day fireworks at Navy Pier.
