Owning a pet may not be the first thing that comes to mind when trying to lead a more ecofriendly lifestyle, but these simple tips are sure to lessen your carbon footprint (or paw print)!
This may come as a no-brainer, but living more sustainably as a pet owner can start with the food you’re feeding them. Buying organic, naturally-sourced food for your pet can get rid of those detrimental processed chemicals found in some pet food brands. Better yet, consider making homemade treats so you know exactly what your pet is consuming.
Use ecofriendly litter.
Sodium bentonite clay—the main component of cat litter—is very harmful to the planet, with nearly two million tons of clay being mined in the US alone for our feline companions. You can switch it up with litter made from recycled newspaper, wood shavings, and other nontoxic materials.
Buy biodegradable toys.
While they may be more expensive than your average squeaky toy, toys made out of recycled materials is better for the environment—and for your four-legged friend. Making your own toys is also possible with household items or recyclable materials that you no longer use!
*Always consult with your vet before changing any aspect of your pet’s diet.
