How to Move Your Summer Party Indoors

We love summer, but it’s unpredictable. Sometimes, the weather forecast says it’s going to be sunny, so you plan for a barbecue and it ends up being not-so-sunny when the day rolls around. If it’s the day of your party and you hear a sudden crack of thunder and rain smacking down onto your roof, you don’t have to immediately cancel the event on Facebook or call everyone coming to try to reschedule.

Take advantage of your garage.

If it’s not going to be windy while it rains, you can move your party into the garage, but keep the door open so that guests can still see the outdoors and it doesn’t get too stuffy. This also lets everyone keep an eye on the weather in case things clear up and you can move outside again. Clear any tools and recreational items out of your garage prior to the party, or just move them into a corner of the garage and cover them with a tarp. Move your food tables, drinks, and seating into your garage to bring the fun partially indoors.

Expand to multiple rooms.

If your garage is cluttered or it’s a big party and you’d rather have more space, spread your party throughout your home. Keep food tables in your kitchen and dining room and encourage movement throughout your living room and any other open, inviting spaces. If you have a finished basement, you can keep the door open and keep snacks and drinks there, as well, so people know they’re welcome to go downstairs.

Have a backup plan for activities.

If you have a pool and were planning to let your guests swim in it, that’s obviously out of the question now—unless partygoers are okay with swimming in the rain. That being said, using your pool in the rain can be hazardous because rain clouds the surface of the water, so it’s difficult to see if anyone is submerged underneath. Of course, you should also never swim in a thunderstorm.

You’ll probably want to opt for safer activities that you can move indoors. If you have time, go out and get a giant Jenga or Connect Four game that guests can play indoors. If you were planning to set up corn hole, you can still do that inside. Just make sure you section off a specific area for the game so that unsuspecting guests aren’t getting hit with the tiny sandbags. You can even designate the basement as a game area, if that works with your space. Depending on the size and purpose of the party, you can introduce games like Charades or card games for added entertainment.

Switch from the grill to the kitchen.

Luckily, you can cook most foods on your stove or in your oven that you can cook on your grill. If you were planning on hotdogs and burgers, you can bake or fry your burgers and boil water to cook the hotdogs. You can also use this opportunity to experiment with cooking foods that don’t require a grill. Whip up a couple desserts, chop up ingredients for a pasta salad or casserole, and try your hand at making your own potato salad.

Just because it’s raining doesn’t mean you need to cancel your summer party. Just break out your speaker and bring the fun indoors.
