Be Winter Storm Ready with These Tips

Preparing your home for a winter storm can be a hassle, especially when done last minute, so make sure to plan ahead and take these necessary precautions this winter season.

Double check for supplies

You may think you have shovels, flashlights, and extra fuel ready to go, but don’t rely on last year’s stock to get you through the season. You don’t want to be forced to go on the dreaded last-minute hardware or grocery store run. If a storm is on the horizon, make sure to make a list of what you need, and go before the weather takes a turn. This includes non-perishables, water bottles, a battery powered radio to keep up to date on weather conditions, and other necessities.

Insulation being laid into frame

Evaluate your insulation

Nothing is worse than feeling a draft from the attic in the midst of a winter snowstorm. Bundling up on the couch with blankets and a mug of hot chocolate only keeps you warm for so long. Poor insulation could cause serious draft problems, so if you think there may be an issue, call a contractor to make sure your insulation is up to par for the season.

Prepare for a power outage

Power outages are a common occurrence when storms hit, especially in isolated areas. Be sure to turn your heat all the way up before the brunt of the bad weather. If you have a generator, check the fuel supply, and stock up if you don’t have an adequate amount to last through the season. Make sure to remember safety essentials—such as not leaving candles burning for more than five hours at a time, and having flashlights and spare batteries handy.

Finger pushing reset button on smoke detector

Test your detectors

Making sure the detectors have working batteries in them is important year-round, but especially during the winter, when our stoves are on more frequently and the windows are closed throughout the day. Fire and carbon monoxide detectors should be checked at the start of the season, and re-evaluated every few months.

Trim the trees

With heavy winds, even the sturdiest of trees can blow over and cause damage to your property. It doesn’t hurt to trim back the trees before a storm comes through, or have a professional do it for you. The winter season may look pretty outside, but it can create a laundry list of problems for the exterior of your home if not taken care of.
