Bee Kind: Raising Awareness for the Plight of Bees

Honey bees are responsible for one-third of the food we eat, and yet they are one of the most misunderstood species. While most people run from these insects, forcibly remove their nests, and try to get rid of them anyway they can, they are absolutely vital to human existence on Earth.

In honor of these busy creatures, the US celebrates National Honey Bee Day on the third Saturday in August, to promote interest in beekeeping, to educate people on the importance of bees, and to help people understand the necessity of their protection.

If you’re looking to take part, here are a few things you can do to benefit the bees every day!

Attract bees to your garden.

Have a garden? Great! You’re already on your way to letting bees do their thing in your yard. But if you really want to attract these important pollinators, you can plant bee-friendly flowers and shrubs. Bees are attracted to bright varieties like purple coneflowers, black eyed Susan’s, and marigolds.

Visit local farms.

There are plenty of local farms and beekeepers selling high-quality natural honey products that are not only delicious, but good for you and the bee community. Supporting these businesses means you’re supporting the bees, too!

Minimize the chemicals.

It’s understandable to not want a large bees nest in your patio furniture, garage, or other areas near your home, but be cautious not to use harsh chemicals to remove these nests as they are detrimental to surrounding wildlife, not just the bees.
