Say Goodbye to Those Seasonal Blues

Around this time of year is when the shorter days and colder nights start to have an effect on our mood. It’s almost like the dreariness outside mirrors how we feel inside. Combat those winter blues by following these helpful tips!

Person walking a dog on a snowy hill

Take a walk
Yes, in a lot of areas, it may not be ideal walking weather, but exposure to sunlight directly correlates with a boost to our mood this time of year. Without realizing it, you can spend all day inside, which isn’t healthy for your body or your brain. Even if it’s chilly where you live, bundle up in your winter best and try to get at least a half-hour of exercise outdoors.

Don’t succumb to cravings
The colder the weather, the more we tend to crave unhealthy foods—like anything in the carbohydrate family. Anytime you feel these cravings coming on, opt for a fruit or veggie instead. People tend to gain more weight this time of year due to lack of exercise and too much comfort food, so fend off this common occurrence and try to incorporate as many healthy foods into your diet as possible.

Woman sleeping

Utilize a sleeping app or dawn simulator
Alarm clocks are synonymous with cranky mornings and tired eyes for the duration of the day. Instead of being suddenly woken up by obnoxious beeping, try a dawn simulator, which is a device that does exactly what the name suggests—simulates light. This gadget increases light in your room naturally, so you are essentially waking up with nature, even when the darkness outside suggests otherwise. You can also download apps like Sleep Cycle, which analyzes your sleeping patterns and wakes you up during your lightest slumber. Nothing is more painful than being abruptly awoken by an alarm clock while in full REM-sleep, so take advantage of the technology at our fingertips.

Remember to socialize
There’s a reason the roads clear out earlier during the winter—everyone wants to cozy up inside instead of venturing to the bars for happy hour or strolling through town. Make an effort to socialize with family and friends this season, even when you don’t feel like it. This could include anything from a movie excursion to ice skating to a weekend brunch. The season doesn’t have to be drab and dull—be sure to call up old friends for good times worth venturing outside for.
