Letters of Gratitude: 8 Tips for Writing to a Serviceperson
In an age when e-mail, text, or Skype is most people’s preferred form of communication, a letter stands out more than ever as showing you really care. And what better way to show true appreciation to a military veteran than to take a few minutes out of your day to write a letter of thanks!
You don’t even need to know the name or address of of anyone in particular—the nonprofit organization Operation Gratitude will send your letter to a member of the military who’s in need of some encouragement.
What to include in your letter
Operation Gratitude reports that military personnel cherish these personal letters more than anything they receive. The most important thing to remember is to be positive and appreciative in what you say. Here are some more tips:
- Start your letter with “Dear Hero” or “Dear Brave One.”
- Handwritten letters or drawings add a special touch.
- Avoid the subject of politics.
- Keep your letter positive and cheerful.
- Don’t forget to thank the recipient for serving our country.
- Feel free to ask questions, just not about killing or death.
- Include your address or e-mail address so the recipient can respond.
- Whatever you say, say it with respect and appreciation.
