Prep Your HVAC System for the Winter

Before we know it, Old Man Winter will be knocking on our doors, requiring our heating systems to kick into overdrive. However, taking the proper measures to prepare your unit before the cold weather arrives can help to lower your utility bill.

Do it yourself

  • Replace filters.
Air filters should be replaced at least once every three months. Dirty filters can cause your system to overwork, resulting in lower efficiency.
  • Run a sound check.
It should be quiet when an HVAC system is in use. The most accurate way to tell if there’s something going on with your unit is simply by turning it on and checking for unusual sounds, like banging or rattling.

Call the pro

  • Update the thermostat.
Old-school mercury thermostats can be extremely inaccurate, causing you an unnecessary usage of electricity. Consider contacting a professional to update to a programmable digital thermostat.
  • Clean the heating ducts.
The heating ducts should be cleaned periodically to allow efficient heating, and provide fresh, clean air. Although you can try to inspect the ducts on your own, it’s best to contact a professional.
  • Look for signs of moisture.
Moisture or leakage around or near your system can be indicative of a larger problem. In the most serious cases, moisture around a unit could be due to a refrigerant leak. Regardless, you’ll want to contact a professional.
