When you’re at the grocery store stocking up on everything you need for the upcoming holiday feast, remember those who are less fortunate. Providing a few nonperishables to your local food drive can make a real difference for a needy family.

Consider adding some of these high-demand items from each food group to your list the next time you go food shopping, and help curb hunger in your community.

Fruit and vegetables.
Canned vegetables (low sodium, no salt added) are a side dish staple that is always needed. But they are not the only options for helping the hungry meet their recommended servings. Vegetable juice, 100 percent fruit juice, and even spaghetti sauce are great ways to add fruits and vegetables. Dried or canned fruit (in light syrup or in its
own juices), are healthy dessert options.

Grains.
It’s easy to focus on holiday dinner, but don’t forget that the hungry need to eat breakfast and lunch, too. Oatmeal and multigrain cereal are easy and nutritious. Other great grain options include whole grain crackers, quinoa, whole grain rice, pasta, and macaroni and cheese.

Protein.
Nothing satisfies hunger quite like protein. Canned meat and fish, such as chicken, beef stew, chili, tuna, and salmon, will keep without the need for refrigeration. Hearty soups, such as split pea, chicken noodle, or turkey and rice, make a great meal on their own. Peanut butter,
canned beans, and nuts are also great protein options.

Dairy.
Choose dry or evaporated milk to make sure those in need get enough dairy.
