America’s Most Outrageous Airbnbs

Airbnb is becoming an increasingly popular way for travelers to find places to stay. Whether it’s the low cost, location, or the feeling of being in a home, there seems to be more and more incentive to use Airbnb.

In most cases, the Airbnb is complementary to the trip, but on rare occasions, the Airbnb may be the attraction. Check out some of the most unique Airbnb’s from around the United States.

Mushroom Dome Cabin (Aptos, CA)

This self-proclaimed number one Airbnb in the world, neatly tucked away in the Redwoods, is a surreal way to experience the great outdoors. Surrounded by ten acres of fenceless land, this place has all the coziness of a treehouse, with all the amenities of a home. By staying in the Mushroom Dome Cabin, you’re perched up right next to miles of hiking, dirt biking, or any other outdoor exploration activities you might enjoy. The hosts promote their “Hummingbird Airport”, a result of their top-notch bird feeders which supply local hummingbirds with nearly 130 ounces of syrup each day. Not surprisingly, this Airbnb is a popular place for travelers from all over. If you’d like to stay here over a weekend, you’ll have to reserve it at least six months in advance.

Dreamy Tropical Tree House (Fern Forest, HI)

This Hawaiian getaway is perfect for getting some time to unwind and unplug. Raised 15 feet off the ground, this treehouse offers stunning views of the woods surrounding it. Expect to be serenaded by the sounds of birds, frogs, and even (harmless) wild pigs throughout your stay. Staying in this slice of heaven does not by any means require  roughing it but bring your minimalist attitude to maximize your experience. This off-the-grid adventure  won’t provide all the amenities of a 5-star hotel, but it will give you the opportunity to get some quiet time alone or with a friend. Likewise, by staying here you help to save the rainforest. For each night a guest stays here, a donation to preserve trees in Papa New Guinea will be made, saving 3.5 tons of CO2 per night.

Mongolian Yurt in the Gold Country (Colfax, CA)

This bit of paradise offers a private resort for up to six different guests to enjoy. A traditional Mongolian Yurt serves as the main attraction, but guests also have full access to the outdoor pool and hot tub area, equipped with a grill, swim up bar, and patio featuring a life size chess set. A canoe and/or two-person kayak are available at your request to use at the nearby lake, or spend your time hiking, mountain biking, and fishing in the surrounding area. Past guests rave about the hosts here, who will be as interactive as you like and are known to cook breakfasts for their guests each morning.

Underground Hygge Hobbit Hole (Orondo, WA)

Located in the heart of the Pacific Northwest, this home is quietly nestled in the Columbia River Gorge mountainside. Instantly recognizable by its round green door, you won’t be able to miss this cozy home at the top of a two-mile path. Secluded as can be, the only neighbors you’ll interact with will be deer, rabbits, and birds. With six acres of land to hike and explore, there’s no shortage of things to do outside during your stay here. Visit during the winter to optimize cozy nights by the fire or wait for things to warm up for longer days and room to venture.

Any of these places would make for the memory of a lifetime. Of course, most of us will never be able to own something as unique as these places, but it would be nice to pretend, even just for a weekend.
