Your Guide to Visiting Freeport, Maine

Summer Vacation | By Lauren DePiero | 0 Likes

If you’re in need of a trip to a coastal town, Freeport, Maine, is one of your best options. From shopping to dining to outdoor activities, this town has everything a vacationer could possibly need.

Shopping

Known for its shopping options, Freeport offers a number of outlets. Featuring clothing and jewelry stores along with gift shops that highlight the local atmosphere, the outlets have something for every shopper. One of Freeport’s most beloved spots is the L.L. Bean Flagship Store, open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year—except for the outlet component of the store. Explore the L.L. Bean store for outdoor gear, and make sure to get a picture with the giant Bean Boot!

Desert of Maine

Though a desert sounds out of place for Maine, it formed when a glacier passed through the area about 11,000 years ago. Today, the Desert of Maine is an expanse of sand, minerals, and glacial silt. You can visit the desert and tour its corresponding museum for a little taste of the town’s history. You’re also free to camp there if you want to book a site for an outdoor adventure.

Boat Tours

While you’re in Freeport, make sure you take advantage of the town’s coastal location by taking a boat tour. You can take a scenic ocean cruise or hop on a sailboat charter. If you’re looking for more of a water sport experience, you can rent kayaks or take an L.L. Bean Discovery School tour with a guide from Maine who will show you around the rivers. For some extra fun, you can book a seal watching tour.

Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park

Nestled next to Casco Bay and the Harraseeket River, Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park is home to over 230 acres of land. Visitors can go kayaking, boating, and clamming. The park also features five miles of paths that you’re free to hike along. There’s even an osprey sanctuary on Goggins Island if you’d like to go bird watching during your park visit.

Maine Beer Company

This independent craft brewery is just off Route 1, and it offers beer tasting for the eight beers that it keeps on tap. They also offer snacks from local vendors and sell beer-themed merchandise.

Azure

Azure serves farm-to-table food and features seasonal cocktails and mocktails to pair with its seafood selections. Make sure to try the house made New England clam chowder and check out the “From Maine” section of the menu for cuisine made with local fish, like the Maine Lobster Risotto.

 Wicked Whoopies

When in Freeport, you have to visit Wicked Whoopies, famous for their whoopie pies. Founded by a mother who started making whoopie pies in her home and was hugely successful, this shop offers countless different flavors. Make sure to stop by this local favorite for a treat to fuel your midday shopping spree.

Freeport, Maine is bustling with activities like shopping, dining, boating, and more. If you’re looking to visit a coastal town during the warmer months or to take a scenic fall trip, head to Freeport for an unforgettable experience.
