How to Spend a Day in Lewes, Delaware

Summer Vacation | By Lauren DePiero | 0 Likes

If you’re in need of a getaway, look no further than the seaside town of Lewes, Delaware. This quaint beach town is the perfect spot for a peaceful retreat.

Hit the beach

Though this is the most obvious choice for a day spent in Lewes, it’s also one of the best ways to make the most of your time there. Head to Cape Henlopen State Park for a gorgeous day of sun, waves, and sand. Pack a picnic and some beach games, and you’re set for a perfect summer day.

If you’re looking for an adventure, you can reserve a cabin or campground and spend the weekend in the park. Thrill-seeking visitors can also schedule ziplining or rock climbing. If you’re looking to stay on the water, you can reserve a canoe, kayak, or paddleboard to explore the ocean. If you’re looking to exercise, you can rent a bike or hike the trails of Cape Henlopen. The park offers something for everyone.

Visit the historical sites

If it’s a rainy day, take time to visit one of the many historical sites that Lewes has to offer. Take a trip to Zwaanendael Museum, which was built in celebration of the 300th anniversary of Delaware’s first European settlement: a Dutch whaling community, Swanendael, which was founded in 1631. The museum building is an adaptation of Swanendael’s city hall, located in Hoorn, Holland. You can also take a trip to Cannonball House, which was hit with a cannonball during the War of 1812. The building still houses the original cannonball.

If you’re looking for some more nautical fun, visit the Lightship Overfalls, a floating lighthouse built in 1938 and moved to Lewes in 1973. You can take a tour though the lighthouse and learn about the people who worked on the ship during the 1900s.

Eat up

Lewes has a number of delicious restaurants for visitors to enjoy. Head to Agave for delicious Mexican cuisine and over 70 varieties of 100% Agave tequila. Sip on a margarita while enjoying a sampler guacamole, which comes with your choice of any three of the restaurant’s delicious guacs. If you’re looking for more of a classic seaside meal, visit Striper Bites Bistro for fresh seafood. Visit any day of the summer in July and August and every day except Sunday during the rest of the year. If you’re not too full, top off your meal with an ice cream cone from King’s Ice Cream for a classic beach treat.

Embrace tax-free shopping

Visit the shops on Second Street in Lewes for clothing, antiques, jewelry, nautical-inspired gifts, and everything in between. Whether you’re looking to revamp your wardrobe or to find a souvenir for a friend back home, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for. You can also visit the Historic Lewes Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings to pick up fresh baked goods, fruits and vegetables, meats, flowers, and more. The farmer’s market also offers cooking workshops taught by local chefs.

If you’re looking for a way to spend your summer vacation, head to Lewes for outdoor activities, a bit of history, shopping, and delicious cuisine.
