Hit the Road and Download These Apps

There’s nothing quite like a trip on the open road to clear your mind and help you embrace the feeling of true freedom. But if you become stuck with an empty tank of gas or get lost on an uncharted road, your trip can quickly turn into something out of an 80’s horror flick.

Feel prepared for your road trip by downloading these helpful apps beforehand that are guaranteed to keep your getaway out of the danger zone.

Roadtrippers

Perhaps the most well-known road trip app and website on the market, Roadtrippers is the perfect choice for travelers looking to make the most of their journey. Input your starting point and destination, and Roadtrippers will spit out a strategic route for you to take, with highlights of popular attractions you can make pit stops at. You can also search for pre-planned road trips based on specific activities or sights you’ve always wanted to see!

Waze

Waze has grown in popularity in recent years, not because it’s necessarily faster or more trustworthy than Google Maps and the like, but because it has fostered a social community among drivers to notify fellow travelers of annoyances ahead, like potholes, traffic jams, and stopped vehicles. This app also calculates the fastest route for you to take and is, most times, scary accurate in its approximated arrival time.

iExit

If you’ve ever been driving for hours along the same route and realize your hunger pains aren’t going to go away anytime soon, only to pass the last exit in 30 miles with a “food next right” sign, you need to download iExit. This app tells you which exits ahead have restaurants, gas stations, hotels, and any other stops you might need to make while in unfamiliar territory.

Field Trip

This app is particularly fun if you have kids along, as you can guarantee your next stop is one that will be entertaining for the whole family. Simply input your interests, and it will search for attractions near you that might be of interest—the app even sends you pop-up alerts when you are getting close or will read the alerts out loud if you’re synced to Bluetooth.

Maps.Me

Thanks to the internet, it’s hard to imagine a world reverted back to the bulky paper maps that generations past relied to heavily on to get from point A to point B, but even with today’s widespread internet access, you might reach a point in your journey where that connection just doesn’t reach. That’s where Maps.Me comes in—providing you a highly-detailed map in remote areas. All you have to do is zoom in on a specific location on the map, and the app delivers an easy-to-read picture of the surrounding roadways.
