Preserving Your Home’s Original Features

There are plenty of desirable features in an old home, such as original hardwood floors, antique cabinetry, and gorgeous molding, but maintaining these features or restoring them to their original glory can be a challenge. Luckily, there are plenty of tips and tricks to keeping your old home’s best points looking like new.

Original Hardwood Floors

Keep older wood in tip-top shape by filling in scratches and dents with stain or marker, and then buffing the floors with a fine-grit sander or polisher. Seal the floors with a coat or two of finish.

Crown or Floor Molding

Be on the lookout for cracks, which could be a sign of water damage. Replace only what you need to, and be sure to maintain the molding’s original shape and design if you can.

Windows and Doors

If you notice the frames beginning to wear or you’re looking to increase their energy efficiency, consider hiring a contractor to make these amendments instead of replacing completely.

Masonry

Original brick is ideal if it’s in good condition, but as brick ages, the mortar will need to be replaced. Maintain the original color of the mortar, if possible, to preserve the identity of the work.

Wood Porches

The front porch is an American staple, and, when maintained, brings beauty and value to a home and the surrounding neighborhood. Be sure to spot paint areas that are fading, seal cracks, or for more serious improvements, consult a contractor.

Cabinetry and Fixtures

Antique cabinetry and lighting fixtures can be gorgeous additions to your space, if kept up with. You can keep traditional fixtures while rewiring for modern technology, and routinely clean and inspect wooden cabinets for damage.
