It is customary in parts of Europe to hang golden walnuts on the Christmas tree, but these aren’t ordinary walnuts. Part of the fun is waiting until New Year’s Day to crack them open to reveal your fortune for the coming year.
- Using a knife, carefully split the walnuts in half, and make sure to keep the matching halves together. Pull out the insides, and wipe clean with a wet paper towel. Allow to dry.
- Paint the outside of both shells with gold paint and let dry. While the paint is drying, cut the paper into ½-inch-wide strips that are 1½ inches long. Use a marker to write a fun fortune on each strip.
- Place a drop of hot glue at the top of one shell. Make sure your ribbon is long enough to hang on the tree, then loop the hanging ribbon and fasten both ends to the shell with more glue. Run the glue along the top shell of one of the walnuts, and secure both halves together. Repeat with other shells.
