Interior Trends to Try on a Budget

Gone are the days of all-white interiors and all-matching furniture. Now interior decorating is all about pops of color, texture, and mix-and-match thrift store pieces that will make your space stand out. We all know how pricey redecorating can be each time a new color or finish comes around, so here are the trends that can be easily done (and undone) on a budget.

Green velvet chair

Make use of one-of-a-kind pieces

Do you have a hoard of personal collectables that you don’t know what to do with? Turn them into the focal point of your home. Whether it’s a funky lamp, a vintage tea set, a holiday centerpiece, or grandma’s old chair, these are the items that tell a story and, more importantly, mean something to you. Sometimes the pieces that don’t initially match the aesthetic of your interior are exactly the ones that fit right in. Don’t hesitate to spruce up the neutral look with a vintage piece from your attic.

Pops of color living room

Add pops of color to your interior

Marble and neutral tones are always a way to keep your space looking polished, high-end, and clean. But adding bright colors to the room can bring that spark of personality to your space, especially the “in” color of the moment. Think blush pink or forest green—colors that are most popular in the moment and then everyone tires of them. Throw pillows, blankets, flowers, wallpaper behind your bookshelves, or frames with colored trim are all inexpensive ways to hit the ground running or to simply experiment with the Pantone color of the moment.

Gallery wall

Put up a gallery wall

Children’s drawings, old family photos, or even pages from magazines can make that dream gallery wall you’ve always wanted come together. Great places to look for inexpensive frames are flea markets, thrift stores, and yard sales; or you can simply ask friends and family if they have any they don’t use. Once you find the prints you want to hang up, make sure to play around with different layouts on the floor before committing to a nail and hammer right away.

Blue velvet chair

Incorporating velvet into your space

Last fall, velvet was making a splash in every crevice of the market: from shoes to dresses to all the interior touches in-between. But velvet is a fabric that doesn’t come cheap, especially when everyone wants their hands on a blush velvet statement chair or royal blue couch. If you can’t go all out with bigger furniture, try incorporating it in smaller ways. For a larger piece that’s not quite as hefty as a couch, an ottoman is a great option. Velvet trim can also be found on throw pillows and bedding, which is doable if you’re not yet sure about the 90s throwback trend. Velvet curtains are another less expensive route you can take, which livens up your room through both color and texture.

Metal pitcher and cups

Make a statement with metallic additions

If you’ve seen an influx of metallic finishes on the store shelves, it’s because everyone wants warmer tones integrated into their homes for a more inviting, grand appearance. But redoing an entire room is expensive and time consuming, so instead opt for accessories like a brass soap dispenser or an old-fashioned copper telephone. Oftentimes these small additions create the look you want without having to replace larger finishes that take away both your time and your money.

Green couch

Not every trend is for everybody or for every home, but it’s always fun to spice up your interior living space and try something new!
