Animal Style Burgers

In-N-Out Burger popularized the hidden menu with their own special animal style burger recipe. Burger patties are seared and seasoned with mustard before being topped with extra special sauce, caramelized onions, cheese, and pickles.

Serves 4

Ingredients: For the carmelized onions

Ingredients: For the burger

Ingredients: For the animal style sauce

Instructions:

  1. In a large non-stick skillet, melt butter with olive oil, and saute onions until golden brown. Season with salt, and set aside (or refrigerate) until ready to assemble the burgers.
  2. Preheat griddle or large skillet over medium-high heat. Portion ground beef into 8 equal patties, spread with yellow mustard, and season with salt and pepper. Cook for 5–6 minutes, flipping halfway through, or until burgers are cooked to desired doneness. Top with cheese, and reduce heat to low and warm until cheese has melted.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together animal style sauce ingredients until blended.
  4. Spread sauce on one side of each burger bun. Add two patties, lettuce, and sliced pickles before topping with the other half of the bun and serving.

Tip: You can make the animal-style sauce and caramelized onions ahead of time for quick burger assembly. This recipe calls for two patties per burger, but you can add as many or as few as you’d like.
