The Only Way to Start a Fire
Since the dawn of time (quite literally) man has debated the best, most efficient way to start a fire. Whether you prefer to break out the matches or are comfortable with the old steel and flint method, there is really only one true plan of attack to get your bonfire going.
The Teepee Fire
This tried-and-true method is almost guaranteed to result in a roaring fire, if you can pull it off. All it requires is a little ingenuity, some kindling, and patience.
Step 1
Form a small mound of tinder in the middle of the fire pit, using items like dry grass, bark, and twigs. Avoid wet tinder, as this will just cause smoke and wont catch fire.
Step 2
Using more kindling, form a miniature teepee overtop the tinder pile. Be sure to leave an opening on one side so that air can continue flowing. Keep adding kindling until the teepee is roughly 6–8 inches in height.
Step 3
Form another teepee overtop of the kindling, using larger planks of wood, and then using a match or lighter, ignite the tinder from underneath. You might need to blow air into the teepee to get the flame going.
Step 4
When the teepee burns and begins to fall, continue adding larger planks to the fire to keep it going.
