Committing to living more simply may help you reduce chronic stress and live a more enjoyable life. Of course, that’s easier said than done.
If you aren’t the type of person who can spend an hour meditating, exercising, or organizing each day, these simple changes in mind, body, and environment will help you to free yourself from extraneous clutter and feel more balanced.
Decluttering your digital life is one of the best ways to immediately simplify. Make it a point to read—then immediately delete—each mass e-mail that you receive. If you can’t make the time to read it, unsubscribe from the mailing list.
Of course, distractions aren’t limited to the computer. So at least once a month, give yourself a day with no set schedule. Further simplify by turning off your phone, unplugging from the Internet, and skipping TV for the entire day.
Finally, evaluate all commitments to determine if they are really important to you. If they aren’t, respectfully decline.
Rethinking your eating and drinking habits can have a positive impact on your mind as well as your body. Plan ways to incorporate more whole foods, fruits, and vegetables into your daily diet. And evaluate your daily water intake. You should be getting at least half of your body weight, in ounces, each day.
Nutrition isn’t the only thing you can do to take care of your body. Find a yoga routine that you have never done before, and do it regularly until you master it.
It’s easy to accumulate clutter. But there are ways to keep it under control. First, check your junk drawers for anything you use regularly, and then trash the rest of it—no ifs, ands, or buts. Next, take inventory of your kitchen cabinets, and create meals for the week ahead with food that you already have. Trash additional items, and then make a grocery list for only the items for upcoming meals.
This strategy can work will in other areas too. For instance, keep a list of clothing you need, rather than shopping for things that you want. When you buy something new, get rid of something old.
