National parks are some of the finest treasures in our country. And, with the National Park Service recently turning more than 100 years-old, there’s never been a better time to reflect on just how wonderful these places really are.

• According to their website, the National Park System is comprised of 413 sites, covering more than 84 million acres of land.

• The NPS was created on August 25, 1916 by President Woodrow Wilson.

• More than 300 million people visit the National Parks each year.

• The largest living things in the world are in National Parks—Sequoia trees and the largest land carnivore, Alaskan brown bears.

• Delaware is the only state in the country that does not have either a National Park or National Monument.

• There is 1 active volcano, thousands of petrified trees, and almost 300 waterfalls in Yellowstone National Park.

• The highest temperature in the world was recorded in Death Valley National Park— Measured at 138 degrees.

• Downtown Philadelphia is the home of the smallest national park unit, the Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial.
