What to Do on Move-In Night
It’s your first night in a new home, which can be exciting but also overwhelming. There is lots to do on move in day, but you know you won’t be able to get it done in one night. So, why not celebrate instead?
Have a family (or friends) game night
There will probably be many nights in your new home spent gathered around a board game or a deck of cards, and it’s one of the most fun ways to commemorate the first night in your new space. You can take turns letting kids choose the games to play, or if you invited friends over, pull out some of your favorites.
Gather ‘round the picnic blanket
If your first night in your new home will be furniture-less, don’t let that stop you from enjoying your first family dinner here. Lay out a picnic blanket in the middle of a room, and serve your dinner from the floor. There is probably no other time you’ll be able to do this, so make the most of it!
Take some photos
Hold a photo shoot throughout the different rooms of your home—this can be even more fun if you take the photos with a Polaroid® camera to be able to put the photos up right away. Encourage kids to take goofy pictures of themselves in their bedrooms, while they’re still empty. Years later you’ll have a blast looking back to remember the fun you had that first night.
Come up with your game plan
There are some pieces of furniture that have a set place in your home—you wouldn’t put the refrigerator in the living room and the sofa in the kitchen—but take some time to brainstorm the layout of these rooms. You can even mark the names of each piece, like “coffee table” and “entertainment center” on sheets of paper, and place the paper where you want the item to go.
Make your mark
Now that this home is officially yours, there’s no reason not to start making it your own right away. Try planting a new tree in your yard (or buying a smaller plant for inside), and marking it with a something commemorative or special to your family. Every time you look at it, you can appreciate how far you’ve come.
