In Hawaii, pineapples are called hala kahiki for their resemblance to another fruit native to the islands, called hala. Though not native to Hawaii, the pineapple has long been a symbol representative of Hawaiian hospitality.

Planning a summer luau? Pineapples are essential. But what can you do with the fruit when you’re done eating it? Transform the shell into a gorgeous centerpiece!

Directions:

1. Carefully remove the top of the pineapple with the knife. Using the knife, or, if you have it, a pineapple corer, separate all of the fruit from the hard exterior.
2. In a well-ventilated area, carefully spray the pineapple with a coat of the gold spray paint. Allow the first coat to dry, and spray another coat.
3. Wipe down the inside of the pineapple to remove some of the juice, and arrange the fresh flowers within the pineapple to create your centerpiece.
