Best Blooms for Air Purification

We know that pollutants outside are damaging to the environment, but even indoors, there are plenty of toxins in the air that could pose a threat to our health. One of the best ways to clean up the air in our homes? Bring in a few purifying plants! Here are some of the most popular.

aloe on a wooden table

Aloe
Not only does aloe have healing properties for cuts and burns, it’s great at filtering out toxins like formaldehyde, which are found in a number of cleaners. Just be sure to keep the plant in a spot with plenty of sun, and be careful not to overwater (succulents only need water once every two weeks, and less in winter).

snake plant, plant against the wall

Snake Plant
For a little boost of oxygen while you sleep, try keeping one of these long-leaf plants in your bedroom. They are one of the only varieties of plants to emit oxygen at night and absorb carbon-dioxide, as well as eliminating common household pollutants.

a pile of chinese evergreen, plant

Chinese Evergreen
As one of the easiest house plants to care for (it needs very little light to grow), it will absorb more pollutants as time goes on. This tropical plant should thrive in almost any area of your home; simply mist the leaves every so often to prevent browning.

collection of old bamboo leaves, stalks

Bamboo Palm
This is not the bamboo that grows to be stories tall. Instead, these plants max out between five and seven feet, and are great for removing toxins like trichloroethylene, which can be emitted from furniture and paint. Keep this plant in a somewhat humid environment for the best growth.

mums, flower bed of pink flowers

Mum
These beautiful blooms don’t just look pretty, they work wonders at eliminating benzene—a chemical found in plastics and detergents. They come in a handful of colors, too, and will thrive near a window with plenty of sun.
