The Best Ways to Celebrate Parents’ Day

In the United States, most of us are familiar with the holidays celebrating our mothers in May and our fathers in June. But did you know there is another holiday that celebrates both parents on the same day?

Parents’ Day is a holiday held on the fourth Sunday of July. It is a great time to bring your family together and show your parents, whether biological or not, your appreciation. How you celebrate this holiday is completely up to you. However, if you need some ideas on what to do on Parents’ Day, these tips will make it a day they will appreciate.

What is Parents’ Day?

The holiday dates back to 1994 when President Bill Clinton signed a congressional resolution recognizing and supporting the role parents play in raising children, and the holiday was first celebrated in 1995. The United States isn’t the only country to celebrate Parents’ Day; South Korea, Vietnam, India, the Philippines, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo all celebrate a form of the holiday.

Ways to celebrate Parents’ Day

In addition to Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, this is a holiday that’s dedicated to showing your gratitude to your parents. You don’t have to plan anything too lavish—spending time with your folks and giving them a gift from the heart is the best choice.

Hold a barbecue

With the holiday falling in the middle of the summer, this is a perfect time to bring out the grill and have a barbecue. There’s no need for any extravagant decorating as the focus should be on spending time together as a family. This could be a good time to try some new recipes, so check out these grilling ideas to impress your parents with your culinary skills:

  • Citrus Salmon Foil-Packet Meal
  • Dirty Porterhouse Steaks
  • Citrusy Seafood Kebab
  • Clever Corn Recipes

Enjoy the outdoors

Another benefit of the holiday falling in the middle of summer is that you can use it to spend time outside. If your parents are active, take them out to do an activity they would love like hiking, kayaking, or biking. However, if your parents are homebodies, you can help them in their garden, spend some time on the patio, or take a walk around the neighborhood.

Make them a gift

Giving your parents a gift is a great way to show your love. Instead of going with a store-bought item, you can make them anything from an intricate woodworking project to a simple homemade card. If you need some inspiration, try one of these DIY crafts to give your parents a gift they will cherish:

  • Parent’s Day Heart Craft
  • Beautiful Burlap-Covered Pots
  • Whimsical Wind Chime

Take a trip

Extend Parents’ Day across the entire weekend with a short vacation. While this is more of a splurge, a long weekend at a local getaway like camping or a beach trip can help you keep the budget low. This is a great way to give your parents a break while bonding.

Bake them a cake

Every good celebration involves cake! If your parents have a sweet tooth, make them a delicious treat they’ll love. The following recipes capture the taste of summer, so go with one of the seasonal treats to celebrate your parents:

  • Raspberry Peach Icebox Cake
  • Strawberry Pound Cake
  • Let There Be Lemon Cake

Create a family album

This is the perfect time to reminisce while looking at old photographs. Gather your family photos and create a scrapbook of memories you’ll be able to enjoy with your parents for years to come. Make it a tradition by taking a family photo each year on Parents’ Day and adding it to the album.

Your parents have worked hard to help you throughout your life, so take some time on Parents’ Day to show them how much they mean to you.
