All too often, autumn’s seasonal produce takes a backseat to summer’s sweet bounty. But from September through November, you can find a wide variety of rich fruits and veggies that sets the stage (and recipes) for the cooler weather that’s ahead.

Fruits

Apples

Apples
With more than 7,000 different variations, this crunchy fruit is incredibly versatile and can be used in seasonal baked goods or enjoyed on its own.

Cranberries

Cranberries
From seasonal decorations to tart desserts, these tasty berries are at their best from October through November.

Pears

Pears
Grown on the west coast during the fall months, this sweet fruit not only packs a flavorful punch, but is also known to help lower bad cholesterol.

Pomegranate

Pomegranates
Holiday cocktails, anyone? This tiny fruit, both rich in color and nutrients is in season from October through December.

Grapes growing on vine

Grapes
Always a crowd favorite, this popular fruit tends to ripen towards the end of the summer with the harvest continuing well into the fall.

Vegetables

Brussels sprouts

Brussels sprouts
This small version of cabbage is at its best form during the fall months, and can be found sold on the stalk at almost every fall produce stand.

Pumpkins

Pumpkins
What’s autumn without pumpkin-spiced everything? A member of the squash family, this festive vegetable is one of the best sources of alpha-carotene and beta-carotene.

Red beets and carrots in basket

Beets
While this root vegetable is available throughout the year, it’s at its best during the fall months. Keep an eye out for the beets that still have their leaves attached; it’s a good indicator of freshness.

Sweet potatoes

Sweet potatoes
This starchy veggie makes for the perfect hearty meal during those chilly fall nights. Not only is it in season from September through November, it’s also chockfull of nutrition.

Turnips

Turnips
Another delicious and nutritious root veggie that’s in season during the fall. Research shows that eating turnips may reduce the risk of certain cancers.
