The Best Eating Strategy for Thanksgiving

From rich and creamy pumpkin pie to savory bread stuffing, Thanksgiving’s infamous meal is certainly worth the year-long wait. But with this delectable feast comes the large possibility of overindulgence.

However, there are a few different strategies that can allow you to still enjoy your favorite treats without feeling like you need to unbuckle your belt.

Bowl with fruit and granola

Eat breakfast
Don’t assume that not eating until the midday feast will help you. In fact, skipping breakfast can cause you to binge on more food in the long run. Instead, start the morning off with a hearty breakfast that consists of whole grains and protein-based foods.

Get physical
Whether you take a stroll around your neighborhood or join a game of flag football, just make sure you’re moving throughout the day! Not only will this kick your metabolism into gear, you will also feel less guilty for the extra scoop of mashed potatoes.

Buttered rolls

Skip the appetizers
While they’re delicious, it’s really not necessary to pregame a large meal with finger foods. The majority of appetizers consist of cream-based dips and salty chips. If you do feel the need to enjoy a few munchies before the main course, opt for fruits and vegetables.

Basket of healthy autumn fruits and vegetables

Load up on the good stuff
Divide your plate wisely. According to nutritionists, half of your plate should be covered in vegetables (no, mashed potatoes don’t count) a quarter in carbohydrates and starches, and the remaining quarter in protein.

Savor every bite
It’s a marathon, not a sprint! There’s no reason to try and go fork-for-fork with your cousin who has an insatiable appetite. Instead, eat slowly, and put down your fork in between every bite. Savoring each mouthful is one of the best ways to thoroughly enjoy your meal, and reduces the chance of you feeling bloated.
