There are many things in life that seem to trouble people on a universal scale; properly tying a tie is one of those things. But it doesn’t have to be a struggle. There are plenty of tried-and-true methods—like this four-in-hand knot—that can guarantee you dressing success.

Step 1:
Pull your tie under your shirt collar, and holding both ends of the tie (thin end on the left and wide end on the right), make sure the left side falls about ¾ the length of the right side.

Step 2:
Cross the right side over the left, and then bring the wide end back to the right, under the thin end.

Step 3:
Fold the right side over the left one more time, and then bring the wide end up through the loop you formed underneath the tie.

Step 4:
Pull the tie up through the loop, and then back down through the front of the tie, over the thin end.

Step 5:
Make sure it’s comfortable, and then tighten the tie by pulling down on the small end and pushing the knot up. Make sure the thin end is still smaller then the wide end, and concealed.
