Staying Cool: Central Air v. Window Unit
We all want to live comfortably in the summer, and that sometimes means taking measures to ensure our homes stay at a consistently cool temperature. However, the right method for achieving this comfort will vary depending on the type of house, and who’s living in it.
Central Air Conditioning
One of the most popular home cooling options is a central air system. These systems vary in price, but typically cost between $2,000-$6,000 for initial installment. While expensive, there are a handful of benefits to having one installed.
Easier adjustment
Central air systems often come with at least one thermostat for the most efficient temperature control. This makes it easy to turn up the air when you’re home, and conserve energy while you’re away.
Less maintenance
Once central air systems are installed, ducts and filters need only be cleaned once a year or so. You can even have a detector installed that alerts you when it’s time for a change.
Consistent temperature
Unlike window units, which only cool off one room at a time, central air is able to keep the entire house at a consistently comfortable temperature.
Window Unit
For those with a smaller space, window units are a great option to cool off rooms individually, or to save a little money in monthly expenses.
Not as costly
Compared to central air, installing a window unit is fairly inexpensive. Cheaper models can cost between $100-$200, with the most expensive being $900-$1,000 for energy efficient features.
Energy efficient
If you don’t run your window unit day and night, or have one in each room, they can certainly save you money on your monthly energy bill.
Easy to install
Window units require very little in terms of time and effort for installation. As long as you select the proper fit for your window, it shouldn’t take longer than a few minutes.
Though any air conditioning system is an investment, the benefits certainly tend to outweigh the costs when it comes to having an enjoyable and comfortable summer.
