Established in 1912 to preserve the area’s elk herd and their winter habitat, the National Elk Refuge in Jackson, Wyoming, spans nearly 25,000 acres and is administered by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. 

The vast park, which features miles of rugged mountain views, is perhaps best known for the approximately 5,000 migrating elk that can be found there from December through April. Visitors can also glimpse a variety of other wildlife, including bison, bighorn sheep, bald eagles, and grizzly bears, that make the refuge home.

A sleigh ride is one of the best ways to see the elk up close—just be sure to wear warm winter clothing and bring a blanket for the approximately hour-long excursion since temperatures can dip below freezing even in April. You’ll also want to have a pair of binoculars and a camera on hand to capture the amazing scenery and wildlife around you.
