Ingredients: For the bourbon frosting
- Prepare cake mix according to box instructions. Separate the cake batter evenly to 3 bowls. Tint one bowl with red food coloring, and the other with blue (keep the third white). Follow the baking instructions, and let cake rest on a rack for 1 hour.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together bourbon glaze ingredients until smooth. Poke holes in each cake, and pour the glaze over top. Place cakes, uncovered, in the refrigerator for 1 hour before decorating.
- In a large bowl or electric mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, whisk together bourbon frosting ingredients until smooth.
- Layer cakes (blue, white, then red) with bourbon frosting before stacking, and then frost the top and sides. Decorate cake with red, white, and blue sprinkles, and pipe extra frosting on top or sides (optional).
Tips: You can use store bought frosting (3 containers will frost and decorate the cake) just stir in 1 tablespoon of bourbon into each container before frosting the cake.
